If you're thinking about a move to Northeast Ohio, you've probably noticed how many great communities sit within a short drive of each other. That's a good problem to have, but it can also feel like a lot to sort through. I'm Melissa Lupton, a Realtor with eXp Realty, and these six towns are the places I spend most of my time. Here's my honest, no-pressure overview of each one, plus the official links I'd want if I were in your shoes.

Aurora

Aurora is a city in northwestern Portage County, founded in 1799 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It's served by Aurora City Schools and has city parks, local shops, and dining.

Streetsboro

Streetsboro is a city in Portage County located along the Ohio Turnpike and State Route 14, between Cleveland and Akron. If commuting is high on your list, that location is worth a close look. It's served by Streetsboro City Schools.

Kent

Kent sits on the Cuyahoga River in Portage County and is home to Kent State University. It has a walkable downtown and is served by Kent City Schools.

Twinsburg

Twinsburg is a city in northeastern Summit County, known for its annual Twins Days festival. It's served by Twinsburg City Schools. Because it's in Summit County, property records are handled by the Summit County Fiscal Office rather than an auditor.

Mantua

Mantua is a village in Portage County along the Cuyahoga River and State Route 44, incorporated in 1898. It's served by Crestwood Local Schools, and it's a nice fit for buyers who like a small-village feel.

Bainbridge Township

Bainbridge Township is in southwestern Geauga County, and many addresses there use a Chagrin Falls mailing address, so don't be surprised when you see that on listings. It's served by the Kenston Local School District.

How to Choose the Right Town for You

Every one of these communities has its own personality, and the "best" one really depends on you. A few questions I always ask:

  • Where do you commute? Map your drive at the times you'd actually travel.
  • What matters most in schools? Look at district sites and the Ohio School Report Cards in addition to rating sites.
  • City, village, or township? Services, zoning, and the overall feel can differ.
  • What does a weekend look like? Downtowns, parks, and trails vary from town to town.

Visit at different times of day, too. A town can feel very different on a Saturday morning than on a weekday evening.
